Galatians 5:13-26 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is … [Read more...]

Grace and Mercy

Long ago I heard this distinction between grace and mercy: Grace is God giving us what we don't deserve. Mercy is God sparing us from what we do deserve. For many years this distinction has helped me when I was confused about how to respond to a specific situation or circumstance. It doesn't resolve every quandary about how we should act toward those around us, but it does help in assessing our role in ministering to one another. Our Hope In Christ

Romans 15:1-13 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide WE MIGHT HAVE HOPE. 12 And again, Isaiah says, "The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope." 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace AS YOU TRUST IN HIM, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Today we'll conclude this series with a look at how the name of Jesus is both wonderful and powerful. When we think about … [Read more...]

Learning From The Proverbs (Part 4)

  1.  Wisdom is a treasure, 1-6 1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— 3 indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and … [Read more...]

Learning From The Proverbs – Part 3

This is the final section of Proverbs, chapter one. In this passage Solomon gives wisdom a voice. He described wisdom as a person. Personification is a tool writers, speakers and teachers use to attribute human qualities to that which is not human; in this case, wisdom. Proverbs 1: 20-33 20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; 21 on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: 22 “How long will you who are simple love your … [Read more...]
