Living What We Believe

Philippians 1:27 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. The most difficult part of being a follower of Jesus is doing what we know to do. The knowing is important, otherwise we wouldn't have a standard for behavior; but the doing is the evidence that we believe what we know. That's why claiming to be a "Christian" can be empty and baseless. Anyone can make a claim. In fact, many do. But how we live is the evidence that we are followers of … [Read more...]

Biblical Perspective

I know we were all saddened by the news of the violence in Charlottesville, VA this past week. And I believe this is a good time to affirm that we, as followers of Jesus, do not condone or in any way excuse the actions of those who promote or act in such evil ways. So with that in mind, I want to remind you of some Biblical truths which can help us remain focused upon what is most important in such troubling circumstances. In the midst of all the mess we observe around us in the world, it's … [Read more...]

Living Light (not living lite)

Light is a fascinating subject. We are drawn to light because our eyes naturally respond to light stimulus. Light is energy and, as many people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder will attest, (Is it proper to even suggest someone has a disorder these days?) light has an emotional and physiological impact which gives us energy. Light overwhelms darkness, but never the other way around. When you flip a light switch off, you're not switching on darkness, your removing the source of … [Read more...]

Looking Back

Luke 9:57-62 57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go … [Read more...]

Small World…Big God

Genesis 11 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Astronomers conservatively estimate there are between 100 and 200 BILLION galaxies in our observable universe. Our galaxy, the Milky Way is about 100,000 light year (LY) across (a light year is roughly 5.9 trillion miles). The largest known galaxy, labeled IC 1101, is so vast (5.5 million LY in diameter) it would take approximately 50 Milky Ways to span across it. These basic statistics give you some sense of how … [Read more...]

No Resurrection…No Savior

We read in the Bible about a man named Lazarus who the scriptures tell us was a beloved friend of Jesus. Lazarus had two sisters, Mary and Martha whom Jesus knew as well. The story of Lazarus is found in John, chapter 11 and it is significant because Lazarus became sick and died, but after he has been dead four days Jesus arrived at Bethany where Mary and Martha lived and where Lazarus was buried and performed a miracle. The narrative of the story recounts the pain and grief of Lazarus' sisters … [Read more...]
