Faithful, Holy, Loving

Great is thy faithfulness

God is Faithful

When we consider the faithfulness of God we are reminded of how unfaithful we are by comparison. God has made promises to us which He never fails to keep. We have all made promises which we haven’t kept. God even reminds us in our desperate seasons that He will be faithful to us.

Lamentations 3:19-24
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.
20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.
21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

Those of us who place our trust in God have discovered through firsthand experience that God is faithful. We have never been forsaken; we have never been abandoned; we have never been ignored or for one nanosecond forgotten.

God knows our needs before we find the words to express them. God sees our struggles long before we have encountered them. God is aware of us when we are unaware of ourselves. He is present even when we run from Him.

God is faithful….always….and forever!

holy, holy, holy
God is Holy

When the Bible speaks of holiness it means that someone or something is set apart; uniquely and exclusively identified; incomparable. God, of course, is the standard for holiness in that ONLY He is God. There is none like or comparable to Him.

Psalm 77:13
13 Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?

David understood that God is singular. Everything that God is and does is unique, original and unlike anything else.

The Hebrew name for God was YHWH; originally pronounced Yahweh, but they eventually gave up on pronouncing it, considering it too holy for human lips. Such was their reverence for the Most Holy God.

God is not holy because He does right things, He is holy because He is incomparable, indescribable, unimaginable. We make God small when we make Him even remotely similar to us. He is above, beyond and exceedingly different from us in every way and by every measure.

how deep

God is Love

Just as God’s holiness expresses how above and beyond us He is, every attribute of God is the most extreme and excellent expression of that attribute.

Psalm 108:3-5
3 I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.
4 For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.

The best David could express the transcendent love of God was to say it exceeded everything known and observable by man. “Your love is higher than the heavens.”

We cannot begin to fathom the love of God. We hope and believe we understand it in some measure because we understand the power of love in our own lives and by our own experience. But everything we know about love in its most extreme expression is infinitesimally small compared with God’s love.

The song, How Deep the Father’s Love for Us, begins with this apt description: “How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure…” It is enough for us to know that God’s love for us is as infinite as is God Himself.
