Independence OR One Another – Part 2

Ephesians 5:18-20
…be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.  Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Make music from your heart to the Lord.” Sing from the exuberance of being a child of God.

Ephesians 5:21

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Sometimes doing what we don’t WANT to do is part of what it means to follow Jesus. Submitting to one another doesn’t mean, however, that we always give in to everyone else’s desires or impulses. Reverence for Christ is the controlling influence.

Philippians 2:5

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…

As a group of Jesus followers who believe everything revolves around relationships, we must seek to create and strengthen relationships in the same way Jesus did:

  • Accepting (not the same as condoning), generous and compassionate to all
  • Instructive to the receptive
  • Personally committed to a few

Colossians 3:16
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

If God’s Word is ingrained in us we have the resources to encourage, remind and teach one another wisely.

1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

The world says “tear others down” so you can feel better about yourself. Jesus teaches us to build each other up so that we can make a greater impact together.

Hebrews 10:24

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…

Be a cheerleader for those who do good. Support and encourage godly initiative.

1 Peter 4:9
Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

It seems that “without grumbling” must be the point, here. Doing the right thing with a wrong attitude will void the blessing such actions might bring.

1 John 1:7

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Our common bond through our relationship with Jesus offers opportunities to share in one another’s lives.

John 13:34

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

The hardest command in scripture is this one. Loving as Jesus loved can only happen when we truly love Him above all others.
